About

On writing from a small space

We write about one-room living because we have lived in it.

Why an essay

Most advice about small apartments arrives as a list of forty products with a discount code. We wanted to write the other kind: an essay in chapters, where the room comes first and the objects come second, as footnotes. A studio is a way of living before it is a shopping problem, and we think the order matters.

How we choose what to mention

We favour things that do two jobs, that can be understood in a sentence and that will still seem sensible in five years. When we name a designer or a design, such as the Murphy bed, the Frankfurt Kitchen or the Anglepoise lamp, it is because the idea has a history worth knowing. We name types of product more often than brands, and we try to say what to check before you buy.

Independence

Guidetalstashsafari is independent. We do not sell products, we do not accept payment for placement, and if we ever add links that earn us a commission we will say so plainly on the page where they appear. Our notes on products are editorial opinion and general information, not professional advice; for anything structural or electrical, please consult a qualified tradesperson and your landlord.

Corrections

We make mistakes, especially with measurements and dates. If you spot one, write to us through the letter form or at [email protected], and we will correct the page and note the change.
